Where Little Readers Grow

Soundlings is a UK-based Phonics resource company founded by teachers and parents Claire and Jemma alongside Kate Lawler.

Where to Start

Starting Phonics can feel a little overwhelming, we completely understand. The word itself might seem unfamiliar or even a bit intimidating at first. But if you’re a parent or practitioner looking to give your children the very best start on their reading journey, you’re already in the right place.

Our resources are designed to guide you step by step, and the easiest way to begin is shopping by age. This will help you find exactly what your children need, right when they need it, so you can feel confident you’re starting in just the right place.

Formerly known as Sounds Fun Resources, Soundlings marks an exciting new chapter for the business, with Kate joining the founders to help grow the brand and champion early literacy. Together, they create playful, reusable Phonics resources for children aged 3–7 that turn early reading into an exciting adventure, whether at home, in nurseries, Early Years settings or classrooms.

Led by our friendly Soundlings characters, children explore sounds through hands-on play, colourful bespoke artwork and carefully designed resources that follow how Phonics is taught in UK schools. Every product models pure sounds from the very beginning, helping little learners build strong reading foundations while having so much fun they hardly realise they’re learning. Designed and made in the UK, Soundlings makes Phonics clear, engaging and confidence-boosting for children, parents and practitioners alike.

Play and learn with Soundlings. Where little readers grow.

Meet the Soundlings

The Soundlings are a family of friendly Phonics characters who appear throughout our resources to support children on their reading, writing and spelling journey. Each has a special role, helping with sounds, tricky words, digraphs, trigraphs and letter formation. They make Phonics fun, visual and easy to remember.

Absolutely fabulous company. The resources are amazing and keep our 3 year old engaged for a long time. They’ve helped our 3 year old so much with his delayed speech. We use the resources daily and have everything for his age to rotate through! Thank you Claire and Jemma.

Parents praise & testimonials

Just wanted to mention that all the resources are high quality, and the ladies that run the business they put so much effort in making sure the resources help children love to read and write. Plus the delivery is super fast and efficient. Also they are so helpful if you have any questions.

Alexandra, Parent

These resources are fantastic! We now have quite a collection. I am so pleased we found them, screen free fun whilst learning. My child loves using them and often chooses to take the flashcards and games out with us for dinner.

❊ FAQs

You’ve got questions,
we’ve got answers

  • All of our products are thoughtfully designed by qualified, highly experienced teachers to make learning both effective and enjoyable. Our hands-on, interactive Phonics resources can be used at home or on the go, making them perfect for travel and keeping little learners happily engaged wherever they are.

  • Building a strong Phonics foundation from an early age helps children become confident, independent readers. It also supports their understanding across the entire curriculum, including subjects such as Maths, where reading and interpreting written questions is essential.

  • Your child will learn pure sounds, including digraphs (two letters making one sound), trigraphs (three letters making one sound) and split digraphs. They will develop skills in correct letter formation, name recognition, early writing, word building, segmenting and blending to support reading. Fine motor skills are also strengthened to improve pencil control and cutting.

  • A pure sound is the clear and accurate pronunciation of a letter sound without adding an extra sound at the end. For example, the /p/ sound is pronounced as “p” rather than “puh.” Using pure sounds helps children blend sounds together more easily when reading and spelling.

  • We begin with the sounds s,a,t,p,i,n because they are commonly used and can be quickly combined to form simple words such as sat, sit, pan, pin, tip and tap. This approach allows children to start reading and writing meaningful words sooner than learning the alphabet in order.

  • We focus on teaching pure sounds first, as letter names can sometimes be confusing for early learners. Learning sounds first helps children quickly begin blending and reading words with confidence.

  • We use a synthetic Phonics approach, where words are broken down into their smallest sounds and then blended together to read them. This skill also supports spelling by helping children identify phonemes (single sounds, such as “a”), match them to letters and confidently read or spell words.

  • Yes. Our resources are carefully designed to be progressive, allowing children to work at their own pace. Our Phonics Activity Busy Books gradually increase in challenge while supporting and scaffolding learning. Children practise single letter sounds, digraphs, trigraphs, and split digraphs through engaging word-building and reading activities. Our durable, reusable products can be revisited at any time to reinforce learning and track progress.

  • We use Sassoon Infant font throughout our products. This child-friendly typeface features rounded letter shapes and shortened ascenders and descenders, making it easier to read. It is also often recommended for children with dyslexia.

  • Yes. All objects featured on our resources are phonetic, with the exception of the Alphabet Poster. This means the words can be decoded, segmented, and blended easily, allowing children to read and spell independently with confidence. The objects featured on our Alphabet Poster focus on the correct initial Phonics sound.

  • Our resources cover Phonics Phases 2–5. Phase 1 focuses on phonemic awareness and begins from birth, while Phase 2 introduces the first formal letter-sound relationships.
If your child is new to Phonics, we recommend starting with our Phonics Playdough Book and Phase 2 Flashcards to build strong foundations in sound recognition and early reading. All resources can be used at your child’s own pace. Suitable from age 3+, with adult supervision recommended due to small parts.

  • Yes. Hearing correct sound pronunciation and linking it to letter shapes and visual cues supports speech and language development. All of our products, excluding the posters, card games and learning mats, are accompanied by a teacher-led pronunciation video. Our interactive, hands-on resources encourage discussion and communication and can also be used as a supportive tool for non-verbal learners or as part of speech and language therapy.
